Making sentences with clothing items in Spanish and asking prices

Asking prices in Spanish

First of all, for asking prices in Spanish, we may use two questions: ¿Cuánto vale + objeto? or ¿Cuánto cuesta + objeto?, CUÁNTO being HOW MUCH here. The key verbs to rememberare VALER (to be worth) and COSTAR (to cost). In order to ask the price of a single item, like UNA BLUSA (a blouse), you should ask ¿Cuánto vale esta blusa? but to ask the price of several items, change VALE to VALEN and make the noun plural as in ¿Cuánto valen estas blusas?.

Demonstrative pronouns like ESE, ESTE and so on are very common when asking for the price of an item. Other ways to ask are ¿Cuál es el precio de este artículo?, meaning what’s the price of this item?, or in a more polite way ¿Me puede decir el precio de este artículo?, which means can you tell me the price of this item? Let’s read and listen a few examples using the vocabulary for some clothing items in Spanish and the different ways to ask for prices.

Camisa / ¿Cuánto vale esa camisa? – Esa camisa vale 20 dólares.

Shirt / How much is this shirt? – This shirt is 20 dollars

Camiseta / ¿Cuánto cuesta esta camiseta? – Cuesta 10 dólares.

T-shirt/ How much is this t-shirt? – It is 10 dollars

Corbata – ¿Me puede decir el precio de esta corbata?

Tie/necktie – Can you tell me the price of this tie?

Shorts/pantalones cortos- Disculpe ¿Cuál es el precio de estos shorts?

Shorts: Excuse me, what is the price of these shorts?

Guantes – ¿Cuánto cuestan estos guantes?

Gloves – How much are these gloves?

Saying prices in Spanish

For saying prices in Spanish, we will also need the verbs VALER conjugated as “vale” for a single item and “valen” for several and COSTAR conjugated as “cuesta” for one item and “cuestan” for several. Here are two examples:

Suéter – Este suéter vale 20 dólares.

Sweater – This sueter is 20 dollars

Calcetines – Este par de calcetines cuestan 2 dólares.

Socks – These pair of socks are 2 dollars

More useful questions in a clothes shop

There are other questions you can ask if you are buying clothes in a shop such as: “¿Tiene este en otro color?” (Do you have this in a different color?), ¿Puede mostrarme…? (Can you show me…?) and ¿Dónde están..?/¿Dónde puedo encontrar…?. Here are some examples:

Pantalones/jeans: ¿Tiene este pantalón en otro color? – Si claro.

Jeans: Do you have these jeans in a different color? – Yes, of course

Vestido – ¿Puede mostrarme los vestidos?

Dress – Can you show me the dresses?

Ropa interior – ¿Dónde puedo encontrar ropa interior?

Underwear – Where can I find underwear?

Describing clothes in Spanish and saying what you are wearing

Most of the time, people will also describe clothes in Spanish when buying at a shop or saying what they are wearing. To do so, we will need the verb SER plus some adjectives. You can talk about colors (los colores), shapes (la forma) and sizes (tamaños), for example: Esa blusa rosada es bonita (That pink blouse is beautiful) and “Me gusta la camisa grande” (I like the big shirt). We will learn a lot more about adjectives for clothes colors, sizes and styles in the next lesson. In addition, to talk about the clothes we are wearing, we use the present progressive, “ESTAR + gerundio”, of the verb USAR(to wear) e.g. “Yo estoy usando un sombrero” and “Ellos están usando camisetas”.

Blusa – Me gusta esta blusa.

Blouse – I like this blouse

Falda – Esa falda es muy bonita.

Skirt – That skirt is very nice

Pantalón de vestir – Este pantalón de vestir es muy cómodo.

Pants/trousers: These trousers are very comfortable

Zapatos – Estos zapatos son muy caros.

Shoes – These shoes are very expensive

Gorra – Esta gorra es barata.

Cap – This cap is cheap

Chaqueta – Emma está usando una chaqueta azul.

Jacket – Emma is wearing a blue jacket

Traje – Tú estás usando un traje muy elegante.

Suit – You are wearing a very elegant suit

Uniforme – El niño está usando uniforme.

Uniform – The kid is wearing a uniform

LanguageTip:

The verb USARmeans both to wear and to usein Spanish,so it is grammatically correct to say “Yo puedo usar la computadora”and also “Estoy usando calcetines negros” when talking about clothing items in Spanish.
