In today's TED-Ed video, Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis explores 'Earworms: Those songs that get stuck in your head'.Have you ever found yourself plagued by a tune that you just cannot shift? You've been hit by, you've been struck by ... an earworm. Why do songs get stuck in our head?Well, scientists are not quite sure, but psychologically, an earworm is an auditory mental image. They are involuntary. We are not trying to hear the same tune played over and over again on a loop.We just cannot help it. Repetition can be a trigger too.The more we hear something, the more we find ourselves replaying it in our heads. And technology makes it easy to keep listening to the same thing.Again and again and again. We don't get other things, like watercolors, or watermelons, stuck in our head in quite the same way, although perhaps there are a few people out there who get arbitration lectures stuck in their heads ...(BITs, BATs and Buts, anyone?)When we listen to a song we know, we are constantly anticipating what will come next. Tunes are rather like habits, and once they get stuck in our heads, we have to play them through until they finish.Even if that means that we find ourselves sitting in a hearing with 'We Will Rock You' on autoplay in our brains ...Check it out: https://lnkd.in/dNcs2_8bTime to view: 4 mins 45 secs

In a Rock and Roll Timeloop, David Bowie's Major Tom becomes Black Sabbath's Iron Man.Once again, I'm letting my AI narrate and illustrate one of myMedium posts, this time to tell a story that's part sci-fi, history, part musicology, and (a big) part fan fiction. If you're interested in classic rock and cosmic horror and comic books, and you can keep an open mind, this may be the most fun 14 minute pitch for a blockbuster film you'll ever watch (or read).Story by the original lyricists, with some additions from me. Writing by me. Music by me. Video by me. Narration by Eleven Labs, Image manipulation and generation by Adobe Photoshop Beta and Midjourney, music mastering by LANDR Audio Inc.https://lnkd.in/gRfeZGzJtext: https://lnkd.in/gKpwBsPZplaylist:https://lnkd.in/gzzZZp-h

What is choice? There is the famous, perhaps dubious, jam research regarding #choiceparadox where more choice can lead to less purchase. However, we want to maximize utility by minimizing the distance between our preferences and the product we are consuming. It follows that more choice leads to more variety that is closer to our preferences. But searching for more options is costly, and there is a mountain of literature addressing that. #searchcostsI partition my music interests avoiding opera completely. That is a useful heuristic, but it limits my choice set. I was pleasantly surprised when I was introduced to Von ewiger Liebe, Op. 43, No. 1 sung by Marian Anderson in 1936 (see below). It was so moving I was embarrassed that I had neglected this genre for so long...or maybe this is the only one that fits my convoluted preferences. Since our happiness is heavily dependent on our choice set, perhaps we should develop frameworks, such as committing a small amount of time each day to search, that are more open to introducing variety with less cost. What frameworks do you know of? There is also the fantastic book, Illusion of Choice by Richard Shotton. https://lnkd.in/gBZtKvki
