Video Title

That’s why Lowe’s is investing $100 million to restore and revitalize community spaces across the country through the Lowe’s Hometowns program. Each year through 2026, Lowe’s Hometowns will complete 100 signature projects chosen from consumer nominations, plus nearly 1,700 projects through Lowe’s stores, supply chain locations and store support centers across the country.

The Goal

Lowe’s is committed to mitigating climate change by pursuing our goal to reach net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 across scopes 1,2 and 3.

As a home improvement retailer, we are focused on evolving our operations and working with our suppliers, our transportation partners and our customers to make meaningful changes to reduce emissions. Through strong collaboration, this challenging but critical work will drive improvements across our full value chain, ultimately making homes and communities better for all.

2030 Targets

42%*

Reduction in our scope 1 and 2 emissions – emissions generated either in Lowe’s operations or through our electricity use

25%*

Reduction in our scope 3 emissions – emissions outside of our operational footprint

50%

Lowe’s operations powered with renewable energy

2050 Target

90%

Minimum reduction of our scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and offset all remaining residual emissions

*Below 2021 levels
*Targets are not validated by Science Based Target initiatives (SBTi)

Our Path to Net Zero (9)

How We’ll Get There

To reach our goal, we have three areas of focus:

Electrification: Transitioning products and equipment from fossil fuels to electricity
Efficiency: Reducing the amount of energy required to operate products and equipment
Renewable energy: Leveraging solar, wind and other forms of renewable energy to power our products and equipment

OUR 2022 PROGRESS IN NUMBERS

49%

Reduction in scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions since 2016

6%

Reduction in total energy consumption since 2021

86%

of Lowe’s strategic suppliers have set sustainability goals

  • Our Path to Net Zero (10)

    Natural resource collection

    • Lowe’s offers nearly two million products that are made from various materials like wood, metals and plastics
    • To reach our Net-Zero goal, we will seek materials that are extracted using efficient, electric equipment (e.g., chainsaws, off-road vehicles, mining machinery)
    • We will also focus on increasing circularity, reducing the amount of virgin materials and increasing recycled content in the products we sell
  • Our Path to Net Zero (11)

    Supplier manufacturing

    • We’ll encourage suppliers to electrify their manufacturing processes, while partnering with them to increase their use of renewable energy
    • To optimize efficiency, our suppliers will also need to reduce the time, material, and energy that is used in their manufacturing processes
    • We will work with suppliers to collect and report emissions data and help them adopt science-based emission reduction strategies
  • Our Path to Net Zero (12)

    Product transportation

    • We will work with transportation providers to improve route and load efficiency to reduce emissions associated with product shipments
    • We will also partner with our transportation providers as they transition to low-carbon and zero emissions modes of transportation across air, ocean, road and rail
  • Our Path to Net Zero (13)

    Lowe’s operations

    • We will focus on maximizing energy efficiency by installing innovative lighting, heating, cooling, and power generation solutions
    • Wherever feasible, we plan to electrify equipment that runs on fossil fuels, like trucks, furnaces and generators
    • By investing in onsite and offsite renewable energy– like rooftop solar panels or utility-scale wind farms – we’re helping to reduce emissions associated with our energy use
  • Our Path to Net Zero (14)

    Expand sustainable product offerings

    • We will continue to promote energy-efficient products, such as ENERGY STAR®-certified LED lighting, water heaters and kitchen and laundry appliances
    • We will continue to offer customers a range of electric water heaters, appliances, smokers/grills, and outdoor power equipmentto encourage the transition of gas-powered products to battery and electric
    • We can help support our customers’ transition to renewable energy by offering rooftop solar products and installation services
  • Our Path to Net Zero (15)

    Circular design

    • By partnering with our suppliers to design products differently, we can reduce the need for virgin materials and make it easier to recycle or reuse products when they reach the end of their useful life
    • Increasing product durability and repairability can help customers maintain product efficiency and reduce the need for new products over time
    • We hope to expand customer take-back programs to promote effective and efficient recycling, which already include:
      • Rechargeable batteries
      • CFL and fluorescent bulbs
      • Cell phones
      • Plastic shopping bags
      • Plastic planter pots
      • Appliances (through haul-away)
