What is the traditional Catholic greeting? ›

Laudetur Jesus Christus or Laudetur Iesus Christus (Latin for 'Praised be Jesus Christ') is a traditional Catholic salutation, which members of religious communities commonly use, especially those of specific ethnicities.

This Rite is celebrated only with candidates (those already baptized –usually in another Christian denomination—who are uncatechized and seeking reception into the full communion of the Catholic Church). The priest greets the candidates, expressing the joy of the Church.

After being named and marked with the sign of the cross, the candidate is led in a joyful procession of welcome into the church. There the community prays for its new member through intercessions, anoints against the power of evil and shares in a profession of their common faith.

The third and most common greeting, “The Lord be with you,” comes from Ruth 2:4. During Masses when a bishop is the main celebrant, he will greet the people by saying, “Peace be with you,” which comes from John 20:19, and reminds us of Jesus' greeting to his apostles in the upper room after his resurrection.

Dóminus vobíscum (Latin: "The Lord be with you") is an ancient salutation and blessing traditionally used by the clergy in the Masses of the Catholic Church and other liturgies, as well as liturgies of other Western Christian denominations, such as Lutheranism, Anglicanism and Methodism.

For example, when the priest says, “The Lord be with you,” the congregation has responded: “And also with you.” Under the new missal, the response is “And with your spirit.” That's from the original Latin, Et cum spiritu tuo.

At the beginning of Mass, the priest greets the people by saying these or similar words: The Lord be with you, acknowledging the presence of Jesus when two or three people are gathered in his name. The congregation responds: And with your spirit.

In the Latin Church, the traditional greeting on Easter morning and throughout the Easter Octave is: Christus surréxit! - Surréxit vere, allelúja (“Christ is risen!” - “He is risen indeed, Alleluia!”).
