Top tips for finding a cheap flight to New York City

Cheap Flights to New York City from $78 | Going™ (13)

Book in the Goldilocks Window

Over the years, we’ve come up with tips for finding cheap flights. One of our favorites is the Goldilocks Window. That’s what we call the period that’s not too far away, but not too close to your departure date to start looking for flights; it’s also when you’re most likely to find a good deal. For domestic flights, it’s about 1–3 months before your flight. For international trips, we recommend you start looking 2–8 months ahead of time.

If you hope to travel during high season or can’t be flexible with your dates, start looking a little earlier to make sure you see the best deals. If you’re planning to travel over the December holidays, start looking in June, and vice versa.

While we all wish last minute deals existed, the truth is they’re few and far between. Prices rise pretty reliably 21, 14, and 7 days before flight dates, so whatever you do, book before those dates.

Use the Greek Islands Trick

The Greek Islands Trick helps you get to the Greek Islands during peak season, but it can also help you travel more cheaply around the world. The idea is to get as close as possible to your final destination, then find an internal flight or other means of transport (e.g. fly into Athens and find a ferry to Santorini, or fly into London and find a budget airline flight to Mykonos).

If you’re hoping to visit New York City in June and flights are out of your price range, look for flights to Philadelphia, Boston, or Washington, D.C. From there, look for cheap train or bus tickets, or think about renting a car. It involves more work and time but can save a bundle when traveling during high seasons or with multiple people.

Search alternative departure airports

Similarly, look for different departure airports. If you live in Milwaukee and flights to New York are prohibitively expensive, look for flights out of Chicago or Indianapolis instead. We see flight deals from all sorts of airports, big and small, so even if you live near a major airport, it’s worth shopping around.

Fly when it’s cheaper

Summer is one of the busiest travel seasons in the US, including New York, and for good reason. Kids are on summer break, weather is warm, and often this is the only time of year people can take family vacations. Of course, more people traveling means airlines can charge more for tickets.

Shoulder seasons, like April and May or October and November, are great times to travel to New York because the weather is still nice but you’ll have fewer crowds and hopefully cheaper flights and hotels. If you don’t mind a bit of cold weather, January and February are great times to visit New York to avoid other tourists and take advantage of deals. Keep in mind, though, that New York City is one of the most-visited places in the world and you can never completely escape other visitors.

Another way to find cheap flights is to travel on non-peak days. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays are generally the cheapest days to fly, while Fridays and Sundays are the most expensive.

Set alerts for specific trips

When it comes to searching for low fares, let technology take on the hassle for you. Set fare alerts for your travel dates, and you’ll get an email when prices drop. All you have to do is book. Be sure to set multiple alerts if your dates are flexible or if you’re considering flying out of or into alternative airports.

New York is one of the best-served destinations in the world. It has three airports with flights from every major carrier, and JFK is one of the busiest airports in the world. Dozens of airports around the world offer nonstop service to New York, so your travel options are plentiful.

Frequently asked questions about flying to New York City

When is high season in New York?

Like much of the US, New York’s high season is in the summer, from June–August. Kids are out of school, and families typically take trips around this time. Upstate New York, like the Catskills area, gets busy during the fall, when visitors come for cider and to see fall colors. New York City has a mini high season during December, when the city is decked out for the holidays, people travel for shopping, to see the Rockettes and Christmas tree at Radio City Hall, and be part of the festive vibe.

When is the best time to visit New York?

There’s no single best time to visit New York, as the city and state have tons to offer year-round. That said, July and August in New York City can be hot and humid, and January and February can be cold and snowy. Spring and fall are beautiful times to visit. You’ll have nice weather and avoid some of the summer and winter holiday crowds. If you’re visiting the Finger Lakes or the Catskills, summer through fall are the busiest but also best times to visit for nice weather.

If you’re primarily visiting New York City and plan to pack your days with museums, shows, restaurants, and other indoor activities, visit from January to mid-March, the least busy time in the city and when hotels and flights are cheapest.

How many airports are there in New York?

New York City has three major airports: John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), which is technically in New Jersey but serves New York. Most visitors to New York will arrive in one of these airports, and the vast majority of visitors from outside of the US will fly into JFK.

Outside of New York City, Albany International Airport (ALB) and Niagara Falls International Airport (IAG) are also popular. Still, most travelers will fly through New York City.

Which airport is the closest to New York?

LaGuardia (LGA) is the closest to Manhattan. It’s about 10 miles from Times Square, or a 30–45 minute drive in a taxi, Uber, or Lyft. There’s also the LaGuardia Link, a bus that takes you to the subway in Jackson Heights, Queens. From there you can take the E, F, M, R, or 7 line. Service runs every 8–10 minutes from the airport and takes about 15 minutes to reach the subway station. Finally, the MTA Manhattan M60-SBS bus takes riders from the airport to Manhattan for $2.90.

How long is the flight to New York?

The flight to New York depends on where you’re flying from. From much of the East Coast, the flight is less than two hours. From Atlanta, Chicago, and elsewhere in the center of the country, flights range from 2–2.5 hours. From Miami, Denver, and much of Texas, flights are 3–4 hours, and from the West Coast flights are 5–6 hours.

If you’re flying from Europe, nonstop flights are around 8–11 hours, depending on your departure airport. From some cities in Asia, like Dubai and Tokyo, nonstop flights are around 12–15 hours but can be up to 18 hours. There are nonstop flights from a few South American cities, like Buenos Aires, that are about 11 hours. New York is one of the most-visited and well connected cities in the world, and most people around the world will be able to reach it with just one stop.
